How tall should a floor lamp be in a bedroom?

One piece of decor you will find in my space is a floor lamp, be it in my living room or bedroom. Not only does it offer optimal lighting, but also aesthetics.  I feel that a floor lamp stands tall, both as a work of art and a functional element. It is not just a source of light but doubles as a mood-setter, a statement, or even a conversation starter.

However, I know you will all agree with me that this important décor piece can break or make the room’s ambiance. So, how do you determine the perfect height for your bedroom floor lamp? Join us in this article as we discuss how tall your floor lamp should be in your bedroom, to ensure your room shines in its best light.

The height of your bedroom floor lamp is determined by different factors, including the size of the room, the ceiling height, the size of the bed, and the intended function of the lamp.

Let’s look at how these factors affect the height of your floor lamp so you can make an informed decision.

The Size of the Room

It is important to choose a floor lamp that reflects the size of your bedroom. If you have a bigger room, then you should consider a taller and grander floor lamp. This will ensure the floor lamp is not lost in the vast space, while also providing ample lighting to the room.

On the other hand, if you have a smaller bedroom, then you should choose a smaller and shorter lamp so that it does not overshadow the rest of the space.

The Height of the Ceiling in Your Bedroom

As you contemplate the ideal height for your bedroom floor lamp, it is important to consider the ceiling’s role as a co-designer. Spaces with low ceilings are generally inviting and cozy.

If this is your bedroom, then you should consider a short lamp, which will help maintain the visual proportion.  In this case, a lamp floor with a height of about 42 to 48 inches will create a cozy feeling and a close-knit ambiance.

On the other hand, high ceilings communicate elegance and grander. Therefore, you should look into a floor lamp that will create a statement in your bedroom, matching the magnificent verticality. As such, you can look into a lamp that stands about 52 to 60 inches or even taller.

The Size of the Bed

How would you answer the following questions? Do I have a tall headboard? Do I have a queen or king-size bed? The answers to the questions will help you decide on the perfect height for your floor lamp. If you have a big bed and a tall headboard, then you should consider erring toward the taller side of the range.

It will simply look more proportionate to have a taller lamp with a big, tall bed. The thumb rule is to have a floor lamp that is the same as your headboard or a few inches shorter or taller. If you have an extremely tall headboard, then the lamp should be taller than half of the headboard for the perfect aesthetics.

The Intended Function of the Floor Lamp

What is the main purpose of buying the floor lap for your bedroom? Understanding why you need the lamp will help you make the best purchasing decision.

For reading and task lamps, such as knitting, a good height would be about 48-58 inches. This will allow the light to focus directly on the activity without glare or causing unnecessary strain to the eyes. For decorative lamps, the height will vary tremendously depending on the other factors discussed and can range from 48 to 60 inches and even taller.

Similarly, for general lighting, a floor lamp of about 48 to over 60 inches is versatile enough to illuminate the space evenly, while considering the other factors.

And there you have it. While choosing the perfect floor lamp for your bedroom can be confusing, the discussed factors can be your guiding light into getting the perfect one for your space.

By considering the size of your bedroom, the ceiling height, the size of the bed, and the function of the lamp, you can be assured of the perfect lamp that will fit effortlessly into the style of the bedroom.
